How To Guide: Choosing the Best EDC Knife

The Best EDC Knife

The hunt for the best EDC knife is basically the equivalent to searching for the Holy Grail. I found fakes and replicas in my quest and lots of hype. Knives that were too big, too small and some that were total garbage. Finally I decided to go out of my comfort zone with a new brand – Spyderco. Needless to say I was not disappointed!

In order to avoid repeating the past, I’m sharing my top considerations for the perfect EDC Knife.

  • Design: It must be well tested by time and use by others
  • Size: When folded it must fit the length of hand from finger tip to wrist
  • Weight: Must be light enough for carry in summer apparel.
  • Versatility: The folder must provide multiple carry methods.

Based on this punch list I chose the Spyderco Tenacious. This design is truly tested by time. The unique blade design provides a very quick and easy open action by placing the forefinger in the detent. Depending on preference, the user can also use the middle finger or thumb to deploy the blade.

The size is perfect for EDC carry in any scenario – a professional work environment, at home, at the gym or out with the family. The overall length when folded is a scant 4.45 inches, making it a perfect fit in my primary carry hand.

When it comes to weight, the Tenacious also hits the mark. It tips the scale at 3.2 ounces thanks to the skeleton style design that eliminates any non functional weight or thickness.

The final item on the list is versatility and of course the Tenacious meets this requirement as well. The folder is easily configured by the 4 way pocket clip allowing a variety of carry and draw positions: Tip-up/tip-down left-hand/right-hand.

This blade also hits the rest of my requirements, providing a perfect grip with G-10 handles and easy to sharpen blade made from 8Cr13MoV steel. Of course I want a knife that looks good and the all black duracoat style finish has that sexy don’t mess with me style.

Overall the Spyderco seems to have it all, including a friendly price point of $45 at the time of this post. If you’re in the market for an EDC blade, the Tenacious is a quality budget purchase.
